Excerpt from the SD Office of EMS Transition Letter
"Intermediate/85’s will not be allowed to practice with advanced skill sets as indicated at the AEMT level unless they take a full AEMT course. There has been much discussion on offering a state approved bridge course, a shorter version of the full course, from the Intermediate/85 level to the AEMT. It has been decided that such a course will not be offered in South Dakota.
There are many ideologies behind this decision. First and foremost, the new Education Standards encompass much more depth and breadth than the NSC. Due to the extensive knowledge base required of the Education Standards, current Intermediate/85’s could quite possibly be ill-prepared for the AEMT cognitive examination. Furthermore, the new Education Standards project an AEMT course to take 150-250 clock hours. Even though the Education Standards are competency based, clock hours are interjected as an approximation. Bridge course model approximation times are within 20 to 30 clock hours less than the full AEMT course.
Therefore, Intermediate/85’s wishing to bridge to the AEMT level will have to take a full state approved AEMT course. Transition materials will be placed on the State EMS Office web site in the upcoming weeks. Ultimately, it is our desire that each AEMT candidate is carefully and purposefully prepared to pass the AEMT cognitive and psychomotor exams."
